How to Track Genealogy for a Dataset

Getting Started >> Upload data to WeoGeo Library >> How to Track Genealogy for a Dataset

WeoGeo is about empowerment. Not only does it provide a powerful geo-content management and discovery platform, but it also equips you with the ability to track the derivative products or the genealogy of your data. This means that you can see your data evolve, collect royalties*, use it as means of collaboration, etc. All of these with our Relatives functionality.

This tutorial will walk you through the process of creating genealogy for your data on a WeoGeo Library using WeoApp graphical interface. Please remember that genealogy is only applicable to data within WeoGeo. Also note that the examples used for this demo are deliberately simple. The goal being to highlight the Relatives functionality.

* - Only on data uploaded to WeoGeo Market.

Basics

  • Genealogy can be tracked only for datasets ordered and uploaded within WeoGeo.
  • Common terms used
  1. Parent - Refers to a dataset that is used to create a derivative product.
  2. Child - Refers to a derivative product.
  3. Genealogy - Refers to the entire lineage/evolution of a dataset.
  4. Relatives - Refers to datasets that are related to each other and also the WeoGeo functionality used to accomplish genealogy tracking.

Order and Download Parent Data

The first step is to place an order and download once it is ready. In our example, a DEM dataset shown, in Figure 1, (learn more about ordering) is ordered and downloaded using WeoApp (Figure 2).

Create Derivative Product

The DEM dataset downloaded in our example is used to create a contours map. This DEM dataset is our parent order and the contours map (Figure 3) is the derivative product or child.

Upload Derivative Product

The next step in our process is to upload the derivative product to WeoGeo Library. We begin by using WeoApp graphical interface to collect the necessary information about the new dataset. We fill in the information needed. Once you get to the Description Information section of the New Listing Wizard, you will notice an option to specify the Parent Order Tokens (Figure 4). Fill in the form field to begin tracking genealogy.

But, what do the Parent Order Tokens mean and how are they determined? WeoGeo issues a unique id each time an order is placed. This unique order id is also known as Order Token. A parent order refers to an order placed for a parent dataset. To retrieve the token number for your parent order, open the WeoFile (extension .weo) that came with your dataset order (Refer to Figure 2). You will notice a comment at the beginning of the file with the job token value. Just plug in this value. You will also see it in you download notification email. It is appended in the email link to retrieve you request. (Figure 5)

Once the parent order token has been inserted, continue with the rest of the upload process. Finish the upload and you are ready to view genealogy.

View Genealogy

Genealogy can be viewed in the same Panel in which the results are displayed (Panel 3: Browse). Clicking on a dataset with genealogy enables the Relatives button in the botton left of this panel. Click on the button to view the dataset's genealogy. See figures 6 and 7.

Genealogy is presented in tabular format under two sections - Parents and Offspring. For our contours map, you will notice that there is one entry in the Parents section.

To preview any dataset in the table, click on the appropriate entry and then click the Relatives button at the top right of the panel. The clicked entry will be displayed as a thumbnail and the ancestors belonging to the entry will be displayed. (Figure 8)
